Pillow Cake

Image
"Pillow Cake" Year: 2023 Size: 6"x18"x18" Inspired by Claes Oldenburg's large-scale soft sculpture food, this is a hand-sewn satin and lace cake. It is measured to twice the size of a normal cake. I have been baking a cake every month since April 2022 with a close friend of mine, and I was influenced upon seeing Oldenburg's large slice of cake to create a cake from fabric.

Arches

Image
"Arches" Medium: Plaster Year: 2023 Size: 11"x11"x6" This piece was inspired by Arches National Park. It is meant to reflect the rough texture of the rock and the otherworldliness of massive-scale nature. This piece was created as part of a subtractive project, casted in a five gallon bucket and carved using rasps, chisels, and a drill. A small triangle chisel was used to create the outer texture, while a larger chisel assisted in creating the cavernous rock texture on the inside of the piece.

"Woman in Loge" Cardboard Relief

Image
"Woman in Loge" Cardboard Relief Medium: Cardboard Year: 2023 Size: 16"x20"x8" This piece is a cardboard relief interpretation of a drawing from Mary Cassatt entitled "Woman in Loge". The drawing is a perspective of a woman seated in her box in a theatre looking out at the rows of seats on the opposite side of the auditorium. I chose this drawing for this project because of my passion for theatre and my love for Mary Cassatt's history of documenting the private lives of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As part of the impressionism movement, Cassatt's work has a sense of revolution to it which I admire heavily. Cassatt attended an art university, but soon decided she preferred to learn in real time from artists she looked up to, so she moved to Paris to chase that practical education. She never married and lived a long life of passion, but continued using the lives of women and children as her main subject matter. I see myself...

Is He Dead? Set Design

Image
Progress Original Sketch Progress Photos Justification I designed a set for the play “Is He Dead?” written by Mark Twain. The play takes place in 19th-century Paris, France. I designed the setting of Act 2, a luxurious Parisian loft in downtown Paris. The play includes a struggling artist trying to stay afloat with his paintings. He fakes his death in order to increase the value of his paintings, and poses as a woman for the rest of his life, reaping the benefits of his deadly success. I chose the color scheme including light pinks, cream whites, and golds to accentuate the womanly elegance of the loft as well as the velvet and satin fabrics. The walls are made of balsa wood and the floor is of individual wooden pieces glued down to a large piece of balsa wood. Awards: 2021 Florida Thespian Festival District Level - Superior
